PONGO Alliance works to seek ways to allow lands outside protected areas to contribute to conservation of wild species. Private land owners and businesses are encouraged to play a role in preventing the extinction of rare wildlife species, not by giving money to "rescue" programmes but instead by allowing their lands to contribute space, habitat and foods for those rare species. The PONGO Alliance vision is: Making resilient landscapes for wildlife and people a reality.

Dave McLaughlin is Sr. Advisor: Strategy at Conservation International’s Center for Environmental Leadership in Business. Mr. McLaughlin joined Conservation International in January, 2018.  Prior to joining Conservation International, he led WWF-US’s agricultural team, focusing on international commodity supply chains.  The son of a geologist, Mr. McLaughlin was born and raised in Latin America. After obtaining a master’s degree in finance from Babson College, he moved to Costa Rica to work for Chiquita Brands International, where he worked for almost 30 years in a number of different roles.  Over the course of his career, Mr. McLaughlin made meaningful improvements to the agriculture industry in Latin America.  In the 1980s, as a palm oil plantation manager, he led efforts to implement cover crops, address effluent issues, and worker health and safety practices long before they became industry standards, as well as incorporating smallholder production as an integral part of Chiquita’s business plan.  In the 1990s, as the General Manager of Chiquita’s banana operations in Costa Rica, Mr. McLaughlin worked with the environmental community, including Conservation International, to implement a host of measures to improve the sustainability of banana production. He started with two farms in Costa Rica and ultimately executed a $25 million effort to implement the standards across Chiquita’s global operations in Latin America, Asia and Africa. This effort formed the centerpiece of “Smart Alliance,” a book that is now used in business schools as a case study for corporate responsibility and NGO engagement. Under Mr. McLaughlin’s leadership, Chiquita became the first multinational banana producer to be certified by the Rainforest Alliance in sustainable cultivation in all of its operations, including third party suppliers.  He also led the effort to certify all of Chiquita’s Latin American banana operations to the human and labor rights standard, SA8000.  In addition, while at Chiquita, Mr. McLaughlin led Chiquita’s agricultural research team as well as managed Chiquita’s banana operations in Panama.  At Conservation International, Mr. McLaughlin applies these lessons to a host of agricultural industries and works closely with global Brands to improve their supply chain sustainability.
